A Poem
THE NIGHT BEFORE, dear Asha,
You let the rockers have you, leaving
Me wondering hopelessly about what
It would take for me to get in your line.
I’ve knelt for so long in front of you I’m
Resembling some kind of animal who
You sometimes shun, sometimes bring
Home into your embrace. I lack the brain
To understand it, am without the voice
To make it change. What can I do, my love,
That will please you? You talk to me, tell
Me to fetch you a suitable shoe.
