The Hollow Doll (Part Two)
Jackson Repays The Favor
Jackson was so spent he so desperately wanted to sleep, so John took him into his bedroom and tucked him in.
“Get some rest,” John said.
“Won’t you join me?” Jackson said exhaustedly. “I want to repay you for your hospitality.”
“There’s time enough for that,” John said. “Listen, I’ve got to make a few calls for work.”
“OK,” Jackson said and closed his eyes.
Meanwhile, John went back out to the living room and called the first name on his list, which was a business associate, a Mr. Hunter Cooper.
“I need you to trust me,” John said.
Jackson could hear his conversation and gave up trying to sleep, instead deciding on eavesdropping.
Looking for something? he thought.
“I don’t want to kill him, but I will if I have to,” John continued.
What or um who was he talking about? Was he serious?
“It doesn’t always have to be you, you know?” John said. “Your shoulders aren’t the only ones that can bear the weight of the world.”
I won’t let them hurt you, Jackson could hear his mother say.
“I know I have a right to be angry, but I don’t want to be,” John continued.
